Visit a Game of Thrones location in Marrakech

Ait Ben Haddou has a rich history. Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site but this clay city is also the Game of Thrones filming location for Yunkai.

Book the tour

Tour: Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou Day Trip
Cost: $67
Details: All day trip starts with a hotel pickup. Tour includes transportation by air-conditioned minivan, multilingual driver, and guided tour, entrance fees included. As far as I could tell, it doesn’t matter which tour company you book with because all the tour companies combine passengers to fill their buses.

I loved that I could see the countryside and how the locals lived outside of Marrakech. It was eye-opening.
The tour buses stopped about every 2 hours for a short bathroom break in the Atlas Mountains.

There are two very important things to know about the tours:

1) Make sure you pay attention to the markings on your tour bus. They all looks the same and they will leave you, they do not pay attention to who is or isn’t on the bus. On the ride home, the woman sitting in front of me realized she’d gotten on the wrong bus for a second time. It is your responsibility to get onto the correct bus at the right time.

2) The drive may make you nauseous, it’s a long drive on winding roads. I’ll be honest, throughout my entire solo trip to Morocco, the most scary part was due to the tour bus driver weaving through traffic.

Upon reaching Ait Ben Haddou we were passed off to a wonderful tour guide. He gave us the history of the people and the location in three languages.
The tour takes you all the way to the top of the hill, winding through the old city. The tour guide stops often to give the history and let people catch up. Do any shopping on the way up since you’ll be skipping the shops on the way down.
You’ll get some great shots and a beautiful view from the top of the hill.
The optional camel ride on this tour is very short and the camels didn’t look well cared for. If you want to take a camel ride, I recommend going with the quad bike and camel tour where the camels looked better cared for.

I very much enjoyed the tour through Ait Ben Haddou and learning the history of the area. Because of how long the drive is, I wouldn’t recommend taking back to back day trips.

If this is one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones, I need to start watching the show ASAP! This place looks so beautiful. I also love that your guide gave the location history in three different languages, makes it so much more accessible. What were the languages, by the way?

I believe it was English, Portuguese, and French. He spoke other languages as well but those were the native languages of the people in the tour group. If you haven’t yet watched Game of Thrones you’re miss out. Besides being a fantastic show, the sets and costumes are movie quality.

Ok i had to google Ait Ben Haddou as i had not heard of it before. And being a GoT fan i did not know it was filmed here – i always thought it was the ireland and croatia and such locations. This place reminds me of a desert palace in Jaisalmer in India; has so many similarities.

    A speck in time

Interesting read, may be next time we will venture in there. On our last trip we just saw it from distance, no one wanted to walk around in heat.
